Clean Diesel - driver of modern cars and stringent emissions control |
|
München, 12 October, 2015 (APA/OTS) - PGM-based technology helps to meet even tightest regulations - Current clean diesel technology relying on platinum group metals (PGMs) is a viable option for sustainable transportation today and in the long term. With improved fuel injection, electronic engine control and effective emissions controls Clean Diesel cars meet current and future emissions limits and deliver high fuel efficiency. Modern diesel cars consume less fuel, emit 15% less CO2 compared to their gasoline counterparts, and help car manufacturers to reach the EU's 2021 CO2 fleet average targets. Further enhanced engine systems in combination with catalyst technology will also enable reduced real driving emissions. |
Diesel technology is continuously being improved: latest generation
technology combines low-emission diesel engines, low-sulfur diesel
fuels and specialized catalytic converters featuring PGMs, advanced
soot filters, and other devices to cut down harmful emissions.
Platinum, palladium and rhodium - metals of the PGM family - are
coated onto a substrate housed in the exhaust system and act as
catalysts. PGMs are key for the conversion reactions and hence
instrumental in significantly reducing emissions by up to 99%.
The two primary exhaust elements created by diesel engines are
particulate matter (PM or soot) and nitrogen oxides (NOx). New
diesel particulate filters can capture up to 95% of soot, while NOx,
a by-product of air being heated in the cylinder during combustion,
can be controlled using Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR), Selective
Catalytic Reduction (SCR), and NOx-Adsorber (NOx traps).

About IPA The International Platinum Group Metals Association (IPA) is a
non-profit association representing the worldwide leading mining,
production and fabrication companies in the global platinum group
metals (PGMs) industry, comprising platinum, palladium, iridium,
rhodium, osmium and ruthenium. The organisation, founded in 1987, is
based in Munich, Germany.
